Not All Silence Is Created Equal

When I talk about being in silence to others, I receive different responses like:

  • How can you do that, be quiet that long?
  • I could never be quiet that long!
  • I don’t have the time to give just for myself.
  • I’m not going to give up my electronics for a day, why would I give them up for multiple days?!
  • Why would I want to be silent for days?
  • I don’t need silence to do my inner work.
  • I spend most of my days in silence, I am excited when I’m with people and get to communicate with others.
  • I live alone and silent all the time, why would I want to go somewhere for more silence?

These aren’t all the responses I’ve heard, but they make up the majority of what I hear. I can’t tell you how you will feel after you have been to a silent retreat, only what I have felt and what others have felt.

Today, I’m going to discuss some of the reasons to attend a silent retreat versus being in silence on your own.

When I do silence at home, I love the break from technology and our chaotic world. However, I didn’t realize the benefits from a silent retreat until I attended one. The first one attended was hosted by Deepak Chopra and the Chopra Center and my subsequent silent retreats.

I quickly came to realize differences that were unexpected and profound. I discovered how much easier it was to incorporate silence into my daily busy life after the insights gained while in silence. The peace and peace of mind and body I experienced and took with me after the retreat has been welcome.

Silent retreats are designed with you in mind. The event space is carefully selected for your comfort, away from crowded places if at all possible.

The space that my friend, colleague, co-host and fellow Certified Chopra Vedic Educator and I have chosen is located in the beautiful San Luis Valley in southern Colorado. The views from the event space are filled with mountains and the amazing Colorado blue sky. You have the opportunity to soak in the healing hot springs water that has been held sacred by the natives of the area and continue to be held sacred to the current owners. Go to https://joyfuljourneyhotsprings.com/ for more information about this beautiful location.

The space is located in a rural area with the closet “town” miles away. One can truly see, touch, and feel the expanse of nature, a peaceful place.

When you attend a hosted silent retreat, you are supported by your fellow like-minded participants. Even though you are in silence, the love, compassion, care you receive from others in your group is evident and bonds are formed (if you allow yourself to receive). The shared space and silence help enhance awareness and insight.

You all come for your own personal reasons and no matter what those are, you are supported. This is a no-judgment space!

At the retreat there are minimal distractions because you don’t have your normal day-to-day responsibilities, no phones or TVs, or social obligations.

What you do have is a space intentionally designed for inner work. A space that provides nourishing body movement such as light yoga, breath work, guided meditations, daily wisdom teachings that assist in self-inquiry.

At a silent retreat you can achieve clarity surrounding a specific question you may have, you can experience emotional release, your creativity may come alive to guide you on your next journey in life, you experience transformation and spiritual insight, and you relax into the silence and the silence becomes sacred to you.

When you attend the When the Soul Whispers Silent Retreat, feel assured you are and will be supported by the facilitators, Dian and I. We will always be available when needed to help you process what may come up for you during your silence and inner stillness.

So, what about the idea that you have enough silence in your life?

Well, all silence is not created equally. Without a structured environment, you still need to navigate your busy, noisy, and often demanding and chaotic day-to-day routine. This environment is usually not conducive to allow time for a deeper dive into stillness so you can hear your soul whispers.

Without the retreat environment you may allow distractions to interrupt your silence and deeper dive to discover more of who you really are. Distractions in today’s world are plentiful and always waiting for you. A retreat is the time to let the distractions disappear and wait for you!

While practicing silence every day is a vital to our inner and outer growth, by giving yourself the gift of several days of silence and the time just for you, you may emerge from silence and able to integrate your insights into your everyday life.
