The world we live in is loud.
Has it always been loud?
Most of my world was not loud growing up on a ranch and farm in rural Arkansas. There was the sound of the wind, the animals, the seasons changing. There was space. There was quiet.
Then I grew up.
“Adulting” took over, and my world got loud.
Loud with responsibilities. Loud with expectations of others and myself. Loud with climbing the career ladder, trying to make myself better, skinnier, prettier—and worthy.
Somewhere along the way, I stopped listening to myself.
In quieter moments, perhaps before bed or on a run, I would wonder, Is this all there is?
I may have experienced moments of silence, but I no longer knew silence.
Deep down, I wanted to experience more of who I really was. I couldn’t understand the person I had become.
I needed to remember.
Remember who I was…before the world got too loud.
I was still there. Beneath all the coverings and busyness I had placed on myself.
I needed to remember.
My journey has been long, and sometimes a very twisted path to where I am today. I’m not going into that journey now—but I am writing a book about it, so stay tuned!
What I will say is that I did begin to remember who I really was.
It hasn’t been easy. Honestly, I’m still discovering pieces of myself I had buried.
But I’m remembering.
And along the way, I found silence again.
Part of my journey has included attending silent retreats. It wasn’t easy in the beginning.
During the first part of my first retreat, I found myself reaching for my phone. Making a shopping list—which, of course, I wouldn’t need for days. Thinking about what I needed to do next. Finding anything I could to distract myself from the silence I was no longer familiar with.
What was I trying to avoid?
I came to realize it wasn’t the silence I was afraid of. It was the quiet place within myself.
It was who I might meet there.
And I did meet myself.
And some of the parts of who I found, I didn’t like very much.
But through the process, I remembered.
Me.
The precious me.
The worthy me.
The beautiful me.
I came to realize I wasn’t broken. I didn’t need fixing.
I remembered my peace.
That inner peace that wraps me in a cocoon of acceptance and self-love.
And I remembered the simple joy of being alive in this time and this space.
I am so grateful for the opportunities I have had to enter silence.
Not simply the silence that comes when other people aren’t around, but the silence that occurs when I become quiet on the outside—and finally have the opportunity to hear the whispers on the inside.
When did it become loud for you?
When did you stop hearing yourself?
Would you like the opportunity to get quiet enough to listen—and perhaps hear the whispers of your soul?
If so, there is a space waiting for you.
Join me and my co-host October 5–9, 2026, in the beautiful Colorado mountains for When the Soul Whispers Silent Retreat.
For three days, we will enter into silence. A time to put down the phone, step away from the demands and noise of everyday life, and simply be.
A time to listen.
A time to reconnect.
A time to remember.
To remember you…
before your world got loud.
